No, it is just different.

OK, I now see that's not a problem.  I thought it would make it
impossible to mount file systems under /mnt or /mnt2 but now I've
tried it, it can be done -- and I now see it's just / that's write
protected.  The other file systems aren't so /tmp can be used for
scratch space.

I don't see any wd drives appearing here, assuming you have a harddisk,
this is probably part of the problem (and may also explain the drive 1
for cd0).

No, there wasn't hard disk attached at the time (and the DVD drive
was jumpered in Slave mode, as Mouse suggested).

I guess something is not properly detected about your IDE or SATA parts of
the system. Can you provide the 5.1.x dmesg?

5.1.2's install CD's dmesg is shown below, also with no hard disk and
the DVD in Slave mode.

Below that I've pasted 6.0_BETA's dmesg with a disk attached and the
DVD in Master mode.

In case it's helpful I've also provided the Core 2 Duo machine's
dmesg -- it has a SATA DVD drive.
