Just to be crystal-clear about this, the NetBSD bootblocks and kernel

Sorry, I'm a bit tardy responding to this - I don't keep as close
an eye on this list as I might. Does this mean GRUB can be dropped
in in place of the NetBSD bootlocks and it should work?

I'm thinking that provides a fresh workaround for the long-standing
bug on VIA ITX systems. The old advice (use an old bootloader) is
getting trickier a it gets more and more outdated. I know I had
plenty of issues getting this 5.0 system installed - from memory I
needed the bootblocks from 1.6 and the installer from 4.0 to install
5.0...

dsl@ has just committed a fix for this. I aim to test a backport soon.
