Does your kernel have LOCKDEBUG / DEBUG options? They will slow things down quite a bit.

You might have to tell Xorg to use /dev/wsmux1 instead of /dev/wskbd.

-When opening applications in an X session (e.g. Dillo), the UI (even
the mouse pointer) becomes unresponsive. It?s not yet clear to me what
causes this, I wasn?t able to provoke this with heavy CPU or I/O load
nor memory pressure.

Possibly related to LOCKDEBUG / DEBUG again?
