Console issues on PC Engines APU2

Folks --

I have a PC Engines APU2E4 (https://www.pcengines.ch/apu2e4.htm) that I'm trying to install -current or -9 on, but am having an interesting problem with the console.

This board doesn't have video, of course, only a serial console.  This works fine in order to see the boot loader do its thing, but after the kernel loads, the console goes blank.  If I drop to the boot loader's prompt and explicitly set the console device to com0, the console goes catatonic as soon as I hit "return".

The firmware has a setting for "console redirection" which is enabled by default, and turning that off results in the boot loader not showing anything after it's loaded by the firmware.

Any ideas?
