Erratum: it gets:

  read text: Input/output error

Guessing that maybe I'm trying to boot an amd64 kernel on a i386 box (not
sure what the box is), I just tried

http://ftp.fr.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-6.1/i386/binary/kernel/netbsd-GENERIC.gz

  lseek phdr: invalid file offset

(same for netbsd-INSTALL.gz)
