I tried this:

boot -c
at uc> prompt, "disable usb", "exit" ->booted otherwise normally

Unfortunately, the resume behavior did not change.  :(  Some indicator 
lights come on, but the screen never comes back and the keyboard is 
unresponsive.

It was worth a shot!
