Perhaps it was irrational but I tried the Xserver you made available at

   http://www.netbsd.org/~ad/XFree86.bz2

on the Precision 490 which is running 4.0 RC2 [1], hoping it might 
stop it rebooting when 'startx' is executed, but unfortunately it 
made no difference.
