Actually, most of the time it builds fine with nodejs 26. So I think
it's fine.

It's just that nodejs is buggy and sometimes dies/hangs.

Yes it is, but 24 is also the default, and there was a bug in the
nodejs*/buildlink3.mk files that usually preferred 26. I think I just
fixed it, my next build will be with nodejs24, says bob.
