It looks to be an issue with sh, Patrick sent me a copy of the message
off list, and I can confirm that switching from an older sh to the one
now in current causes this, but I don't yet know why (don't yet know
exactly what is happening not even what script it is that is performing
incorrectly).
You can just use an older sh, an older release, or if this really becomes
a problem, I can revert the changes to sh (not trivial necessarily, as
there were a few recently, none of which should have caused any harm, it
isn't clear yet just what to revert).
It might take me a couple of days just to work through the gettext build
process, to find out what I need to be looking at in sh to fix the problem
(once I know that much, I'd hope it won't take long to actually fix).
