I had contemplated a grand scheme to have database of required space,
and maybe RAM usage for various MAKE_JOBS, and then be able to set the
amount of tmpfs available, so that it would switch dynamically.  But of
course that's actual work and not clearly worth it.

It's also highly dependent on user settings. For example I believe in shipping debuggable binaries, and so compile with "-g" before converting to CTF, which obviously massively increases disk usage.
