Ah, I also should have given a different branch.

So, quick example of querying from cvs (with a "cvs up -A" at the end
to put things back)

% cd /pkgsrc/lang/perl5
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)2% cvs status -v Makefile.common | grep
pkgsrc-.\*branch | head -5
        pkgsrc-2023Q1                   (branch: 1.45.6)
        pkgsrc-2022Q4                   (branch: 1.45.4)
        pkgsrc-2022Q3                   (branch: 1.45.2)
        pkgsrc-2022Q2                   (branch: 1.44.2)
        pkgsrc-2022Q1                   (branch: 1.43.8)
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)3% grep ^DISTNAME Makefile.common
DISTNAME=       perl-5.36.1
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)4% cvs -q up -r pkgsrc-2023Q1 Makefile.common
P Makefile.common
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)5% grep ^DISTNAME Makefile.common
DISTNAME=       perl-5.36.0
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)6% cvs -q up -r pkgsrc-2022Q4 Makefile.common
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)7% grep ^DISTNAME Makefile.common
DISTNAME=       perl-5.36.0
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)8% cvs -q up -r pkgsrc-2022Q3 Makefile.common
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)9% grep ^DISTNAME Makefile.common
DISTNAME=       perl-5.36.0
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)10% cvs -q up -r pkgsrc-2022Q2 Makefile.common
P Makefile.common
(abs@iris /pkgsrc/lang/perl5)11% grep ^DISTNAME Makefile.common

Or, if you prefer scripting :)

cvs update: `Makefile.common' is no longer in the repository
^C

Notes:
- Very old branches may not build on modern operating systems.
- Once you have a CVS checkout from anoncvs, you can copy it and then
just 'cvs -q up -dP pkgsrc-2022Q2' (or similar) at its top level to
switch to a branch
