py27-libxml2 fails just before stage-install phase?

While running pkg_rr, on its way to replacing "evince3", it builds
"py27-libxml2" as a dependency (I've gotten into the habit of removing
all packages which don't have anything depending on them, so build-time
and tool dependencies are often removed and re-installed from scratch).

On every platform I've built packages on (amd64, i386, sparc, evbearmv7hf-el)
netbsd-8, -9, and -current, building "py27-libxml2" fails with:

[...]
Writing /d0/build/pkgsrc/textproc/py-libxml2/work/.destdir/usr/pkg/lib/python2.7/site-packages/libxml2_python-2.9.9-py2.7.egg-info
=> Automatic manual page handling
=> Generating post-install file lists
=> Checking file-check results for py27-libxml2-2.9.9
sh: cannot create /d0/build/pkgsrc/textproc/py-libxml2/work/.error/check-files-prefix: directory nonexistent
*** Error code 2

Stop.
make[3]: stopped in /x/pkgsrc/textproc/py-libxml2
*** Error code 1

Stop.

When I go in manually and run:

  $ make PYTHON_VERSION_REQD=27 stage-install

it completes. I can then go on to replace "evince3".

Has anyone else run across this?
