I much prefer putting package options into mk.conf or make.conf as pkgsrc does, and so does Gentoo (Linux): so much easier to control and keep track of options that way.
Before FreeBSD adopted dialog4ports, there was a nastier dialog. When I specified a log file, for instance, in port directory,
make install clean |& tee build.log (using tcsh shell),
the screen would become horribly messed up.
dialog4ports, like its predecessor, dialog, does not allow going back to correct a finger error.
