Sendmail out of space issue

Hello,

I've seen this problem every now and then over the last couple of decades, 
but it happens infrequently enough that I haven't tried to track down the 
problem. Nowadays, though, every several months sendmail from pkgsrc 
becomes unhappy because it thinks the disk is full:

Feb 23 22:09:01 tim sm-mta[18791]: filesys_update failed: No such file or 
directory, fs=., avail=-1, blocksize=0
Feb 23 22:09:01 tim sm-mta[18791]: w1NM914a018791: low on space
(hera.zia.io needs 0 bytes + 100 blocks in /var/spool/mqueue), max avail: 0

A simple restart of sendmail and smmsp fixes this, and there're both tons 
of free inodes and free space on the slice that has /var...

Anyone?
