I saw the different shading in the highlighted line on your first link, but 
nothing like that in what I get with NetBSD.

I looked in /usr/pkg/etc/Muttrc, also have /usr/local/etc/Muttrc in FreeBSD to 
compare.

There is also the HTML manual, which I looked through long ago but didn't have 
colors or highlighting lines on my mind.

set arrow_cursor ?

That puts ->(rectangular cursor) at the far left of highlighted message (I just 
tried).
