Hi,

I don't have the time to look into this right now, but perhaps we need to
compile ftp on OS X 10.5.8?

PowerPC, fresh (yesterday's) pkgsrc, fresh bootstrap in devel/bison:

sh-3.2# bmake fetch
=> Bootstrap dependency digest>=20010302: found digest-20121220
=> Fetching bison-3.0.2.tar.xz
=> Total size: 1927296 bytes
ftp: illegal option -- -
usage: ftp [-46AadefginpRtvV] [-N netrc] [-o outfile] [-P port] [-q
quittime]
            [-r retry] [-T dir,max[,inc][[user@]host [port]]]
[host:path[/]]
            [file:///file] [ftp://[user[:pass]@]host[:port]/path[/]]
            [http://[user[:pass]@]host[:port]/path] [...]
        ftp -u URL file [...]
fetch: Unable to fetch expected file bison-3.0.2.tar.xz

How about your setting of FETCH_USING?
Same error as PR pkg/48888 (FETCH_USING=curl, but ftp is used).
