Most annoyingly, the problem (or maybe a different one) also affects
gtk-gvim. The text it prints isn't put in the right place, but all on
top of each other. Full window repaints seem to "fix" it, until the next
time some text is printed...

I removed my xorg.conf (mainly used for setting the keyboard layout),
which made no difference.
