mysql-server-5.5.16nb1 fails to start daemon at boot

Strange problem here.

with mysqld=YES in my rc.conf, the boot messages shows "Startingmysqld." but the daemon doesn't actually start. When I log in, it isnot running, however "/etc/rc.d/mysqld start" starts the daemon justfine and it works. I never get any error messages. Has anyone seenthis before? I have no way to debug without seeing some kind of failure.
