Thanks for the clue. I think this is the problem:

pkgsrc libX11 does get build and installed as a prerequisite for vlc. I am 
using native X, however, which provides its own libX11. The pkgsrc libX11 
includes xcb support, the native libX11 does not. I suspect that the vlc 
configure step examines the latter.

The question is, how to fix this? The best solution seems to be an upgrade to 
the native libX11.
