On my machine, running "mktextfmt ecbx0800" at the command line
generates mf.base under ~/.texlive-2009/metafont/. ecbx0800.mf is
provided by font/tex-ec, but running mktextfm ecbx0800 as non-root
failed for me (don't know if that matters since ecbx0800.tfm is
already installed by font/tex-ec under
/usr/pkg/share/texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/jknappen/ec/. After running
mktextfm ecbx0800 as root I now have a second, different copy
under/var/lib/texmf/fonts/tfm/jknappen/ec/ as well.)
