That's not entirely true, because in order to give users that choice, pkgsrc developers have to maintain the package. It might not be a tremendous amount of work to maintain it, but it is still *some*. If you want to keep on using an antediluvian Acroread, it's your choice. You'll always be able to find the files in the Attic to maintain your own local package. As an intermediary solution, why not creating an "unsupported" category, that would never be automatically compiled by any means, and would only receive packages whose maintainablity costs greatly outweighs their value while remaining used by a vocal enough fraction of the pkgsrc user community? No PRs for such packages would be accepted.
