AIX ld vs. graphics/netpbm

Trying to build netpbm on AIX (dependency for groff). It looks as if something's not right when it comes to telling the linker what flags to use...

gmake[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/pkgobj/graphics/netpbm/work/netpbm-10.34/lib/util' cc -shared -Wl,-h, -o libpm.o fileio.o bitio.o colorname.o libpbm1.o libpbm2.o libpbm3.o libpbmfont.o libpgm1.o libpgm2.o libppm1.o libppm2.o libppmcmap.o libppmcolor.o libppmfuzzy.o libppmd.o ppmdfont.o standardppmdfont.o path.o libppmfloyd.o libpnm1.o libpnm2.o libpnm3.o libpam.o libpamread.o libpamwrite.o libpamn.o libpammap.o libpamcolor.o libsystem.o util/shhopt.o util/nstring.o util/filename.o \
ld: 0706-012 The -h flag is not recognized.
ld: 0706-005 Cannot find or open file:

gmake: *** [lib/all] Error 2

bmake: stopped in /usr/pkgsrc/graphics/netpbm

... now there's some stuff in the buildtools/ that's supposed to handle AIX and use the -qmkshrobj flag to xlc; but I'm not seeing that in the output here. Not sure what's going on...

Any help would be great. Thanks,
