gmplayer build fails...cannot find X headers, etc.

Error: X11 support required for GUI compilation.

Check "configure.log" if you do not understand why it failed.

Result is: no (check if the dev(el) packages are installed)
##########################################

and thus it cannot find many other X facilities, such as Xinerama, Xv, etc.
If I run ./configure in the work directory, it works fine! Argh!
