In NetBSD pkgsrc uses sh(1), a standards-based shell, but on other
platforms it will work with bash. Did you set the shell for pkgsrc to
use in mk.conf like this?

CONFIG_SHELL=   /bin/bash
WRAPPER_SHELL=  /bin/bash
