 Hmmm. On some of my systems, this is defined, while it is not defined
 on others. For those on which it is defined, the install works; and it
 fails on those where this is not defined.

 It looks like the machines on which it is failing has some _very_ old
 version of this file, which contains 'direct" definitions for the rest
 of the directories.  For example,

        TEXMFMAIN = /usr/pkg/share/texmf   (failing system)
    vs
        TEXMFMAIN = $TEXMFROOT/texmf       (working system)

 Thanks for the clue - now I can clean this up!
