 I stand corrected!

Building and installing the package from source works correctly.

However, installing the binary package on another maching fails with the
 same error message as before:

===> Install binary package of tex-tetex-3.0.27774
 tex-tetex-3.0.27774: copying /usr/pkg/share/texmf-dist/web2c/updmap.cfg to
/usr/pkg/etc/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg
 updmap: Cannot find TEXMFROOT, aborting!
