 $ ldd libgif.so
          libc.so.1 =>     /lib/libc.so.1
          libgcc_s.so.1 => 
 /usr/pkgsrc/20110926/gcc34/lib/libgcc_s.so.1
          libm.so.2 =>     /lib/libm.so.2
 
 That looks much better.
 
 I was able to rebuild my sole dependency on that package (emacs). I 
 simply tried to open a GIF file with emacs (not knowing what would 
 happen), and it was displayed in the buffer. So at least for me it is 
 okay to remove X11 from giflib.
