 It appears there's an additional problem here, the compiled binary crashes
 somewhere in perl, and seems to me not unreasonable to expect it to be the
 same reason why the PERLIO_INIT was introduced in the first place. However
 some googling found that PERLIO_INIT was introduced in 5.8.9, so perhaps
 it might be simplest just to add a dependency on perl 5.8.9 or higher and
 keep the patch.
 
 I for one don't know the internals well enough to initialize the mutex
 handling any other way...
