 True, but I also need to compile some unstable software directly in my 
 home account, which should not be used by the other users on the 
 machine.  Thus these variables are set to give priority to $HOME/usr, 
 over /usr/pkg and /usr.

 I have no issue with pango-1.10.2nb1 and cairo-1.0.2nb2.  I still have 
 no clue on what might have gone wrong.
