State-Changed-Why:
I see that you mentioned in a previous mail that you set C_INCLUDE_PATH
(dunno what that is), LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_RUN_PATH. Where do you set
them? You do not have to set any variable to get pkgsrc working; in fact,
if you do, it's highly possible that things break. pkgsrc enforces the
usage of rpaths, thus avoiding the need to set LD_*_PATH.

True, but I also need to compile some unstable software directly in my home account, which should not be used by the other users on the machine. Thus these variables are set to give priority to $HOME/usr, over /usr/pkg and /usr.

Also, could you try this with a recent pkgsrc to see if the situation has
improved?

I have no issue with pango-1.10.2nb1 and cairo-1.0.2nb2. I still have no clue on what might have gone wrong.
