Of course. Evolution is more of a suite application - it reminds me of
outlook. Can gnome not be installed without evolution?

gnome the desktop needs evolution-data-server, gnome the meta-pkg pulls in evolution. I guess the big selling point of evolution here is the integration (via EDS) with other GNOME applications.
