 On this machine, starting the X server is completely manual since it's
 pointless to do otherwise until the cause of the crashing can be fixed.
 
 So, most commonly:
 
   $ X -retro &
 
 or, if I'm feeling hopeful:
 
   $ startx -- -retro &
 
 or, for debugging, via SSH:
 
   $ sudo gdb X
   (gdb) run
