 thanks again.

I am downloading from the Iowa State ftp site, ftp.aistate.edu.
Then I am browsing to pub/netBSD/iso where are available various
 distributions to download.
I have tried two, NetBSD-6.0.amd64.iso , the NetBSD-ALPHA. Both give me
the same error when I try to boot the image.

I do not have much experience installing BSD but I would really like to get
NETBSD to work on my Compaq Mini and Desktop.

One uses an Intel (the mini) and my desktop uses an AMD 64 bit processor.

I am using a USB flash drive and the Universal USB Installer from Penwork on
 an Intel machine.
Are there any other image files that would work better?

Can you please be more specific? Which .iso did you download (and from
 where)?

This is not a message any of the NetBSD CD bootloaders would output.
