 FWIW: it still works for me, but I have this in /etc/rc.conf:
 
 mysqld=YES      mysqld_flags=--skip-networking
 
 (since I only allow local processes to access the database).
 
 Maybe your DNS is not resolving the address(es) your mysqld tries to bind
 to?
