I've retried checking out the "netbsd-4-0" branch sources (or in fact
all currently supported NetBSD branches) with a NetBSD/amd64 5.1_STABLE
"cvs" binary on the server side and a NetBSD/amd64 6.0_BETA "cvs" binary
on the client side (OS is NetBSD/amd64 6.0_BETA on both ends). This
 setup works without problems.

Considering this and the fact that I never had problems with a
NetBSD 5.99.* or 6.99.* client when my server was still running
NetBSD/amd 5.1_STABLE my conclusion is that "cvs server" mode
is somehow broken in "netbsd-6" (and probably NetBSD-current).

        Kind regards
