Can you please explain the problem a bit more detailed?
How do you start the X server, and what did you get before the update?
The changes (besides the unrelated usb keyboard mapping change) actually
do something very simple: when X starts up, the default background (gray
stiples) is replaced by a solid black. This should be the only visible
change.
Once your .xinitrc or whatever fires up an xterm and the window manager,
you get whatever is configured for those (maybe with a black background
now, but that is easily overridable in your configuration).
Also, if for some reason you do not get this far, please try to ssh
into the machine and fire up an xterm with proper -display manually and
see if this starts.
