On the console, characters are disappearing magically. All characters of the 
same value are disappearing at a time, and new characters of that type don't 
come back in later input.

As an example, if a "." disappears from the hostname, all "."s on the entire 
screen disappear at the same time. In later output of e.g. make, the dots are 
missing as well.

I might be mistaken about that one, but it seems that if output is scrolling 
through a lot, the process of disappearing is slowed down.
