My attempt to boot -current GENERIC and disable pcdisplay0/vga0 via
userconf were ultimately unsuccesful. The first attempt booting that
kernel after power-up always panicked with "cnopen: no console device".
Following reboot and disabling pcdisplay0/vga0 in userconf again, the
kernel didn't panic and the display wasn't black. Instead it was filled
with garbage and the machine seemed to be hung. Perhaps I didn't wait
long enough (see below).
I boot/run -current on the target machine via NFS, but the machine has
netbsd-7 installed on local disk.
For comparison, I tried the same procedure with a DRMKMS kernel from a
netbsd-7 build from sources dated about 201501111630Z.
The screen went black, but the disk activity light indicated that things
were continuing to happen (fontconfig cache update, etc.). There was
a brief flicker that probably coincided with the X server starting, then
the machine rebooted (no crash dump). Below is what I recovered of
"dmesg.boot" before returning to my usual UMS kernel:
