Has anyone here tried xcompmgr with DRI and EXA?  It's not fancy, but
it does speed up routine graphics operations a lot.  The latest
version is 1.1.3; 1.1.1 is in pkgsrc, so if you're going to try it,
just make sure to update that package.  It's easy to use:  just put it
in your .xinitrc and run it in the background.  I'm using it with the
-a option, which is the fastest.  There are no special effects with
that option, but firefox blazes!
