the following line can be found in "xsrc/xfree86/xc/config/cf/NetBSD.cf":

 */
#ifdef AlphaArchitecture

/* Build the shared XDM greeter on Alpha if it supports shared libs */
#define SharedLibXdmGreet HasSharedLibraries
#endif

A shared "libXdmGreet" doesn't work at least under NetBSD-i386. Can any
NetBSD-alpha user running XFree86 4.3.0 on his system please test if
xdm(1) works? The output of "ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm" might be useful, too.
