Where does your fonts directory come from ? XFree86 3.3.6 or 4.1.0 ?
In 4.1.0 new fonts with unicode encoding where introduced. They get
selectionned first by the 3.3.6 server when '*' is specified in the
font encoding, and lead to what you see. In XFree86 4 font code a hack
was introduced to force the selection of iso 8859-1 fonts by default.

Solution: either use an old lib/X11/fonts directories set with the
3.3.6 server or specifiy a font with iso8859-1 encoding explicitly.
