You don't need to. Just create a ".xsession" file like this one in
your home directory.

#!/bin/sh
exec gnome-session

Don't forget to make it executable with "chmod 755 .xsession".

You have to copy "/usr/X11R6/etc/gdm/gdm.conf.default" to
"/usr/X11R6/etc/gdm/gdm.conf" and customize it.
