Is there any reason for the barrier scripts to physically exist?

I remember rewriting rcorder at mrg's suggestion ages ago, and then
never merging it, but I've completely forgotten both what it was about
and why it didn't get merged... but there's definitely no need to have
an empty/vacuous script just to have an ordering hook.
