Changing the file format also concerns me.  It is entirely possible
that some add-on software (such as is found in NetBSD's pkgsrc) will
either directly modify inetd.conf or provide users with instructions
to make modifications.


You started off speaking of being unintrusive.  I find it hard to see
how changing the config file syntax so as to invalidate existing
configurations could possibly be considered unintrusive.

Changing the syntax is indeed extremely intrusive.
