After I was suggested off-list to use scan_ffs, I also noticed that
fsck_ffs(8) can be told to use a block offset. When I have more time
I'll try this and will report on any progress.

Is there a way to make fsck pass the '-b block' argument to fsck_ffs?

ISTM that an example in fsck(8)'s man page would be helpful here...
