Besides printf(3) (and (1)) and strftime(3) (and date(1)), the only
example of this kind of flexibility that comes to mind offhand is
hexdump(1), and it's a sufficiently different domain I'm not sure
you'll get much from it that you don't already have from Christos's
example quoted above.
