"File too large" errors?

Hi,

I have an NFS mount which has a file I'd like to dump to tape. However, it 
seems that the file is too large:

ls -la
ls: whole_archive.tar: File too large

more whole_archive.tar
whole_archive.tar: File too large

Is this an NFS problem? If so, what would be the easiest way to access a 
nine terabyte file on a Mac OS X machine that would allow me to use files 
this large? I don't want to use, say, sshfs since the ssh overhead would 
make things a lot slower. The tape drive is an LTO-4 which usually runs at 
around 80 MB/sec.
