If somebody want to extend awk's capabilities, look at wip/runawk
package.  Of course it doesn't change the AWK language which is rather
limited, but it extends interpreter's capabilities significantly by
providing a modules system. Lots of useful modules are also provided.
Another example: wip/awk-pkgsrc-dewey.

For embedded application, there is a libmawk, not packaged in pkgsrc yet.
