I saw this go by in my commit mail and almost flew out of my
seat to ask you not to do this.  However, I then investigated
and found the discussion on tech-userlevel.

I'd like to add my voice in opposition to this change, for the
same portability and standards reasons other people brought up.

I'd also suggest that invoking "bikeshed" to silence opposition is not
appropriate, and proceeding to commit a change in the middle of a
bikeshed discussion is a delicate procedure at best.
