I did realise that...  was sort of implicit in me saying it depended
on the shell :-)

The way AT&T ksh (and maybe our sh) plays with the stty settings, it
can get quite hard to work out who left the tty in which wrong mode!

In any case I've fixed libcurses, systat and a bug in ldd that confused
my testing (it honoured LD_LIBRARY_PATH for suid/sgid programs).
